Compare Business Funding Options Before You Apply
Choosing business funding starts with three questions: how much do you need, what will it pay for, and when do you need it? For business owners in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples and across Southwest Florida, those answers help make the first conversation more useful.
Compare the purpose before the payment
SBA loans: SBA-backed financing can support eligible working capital, equipment and other business uses. The lender reviews repayment ability and program requirements; an SBA guarantee is not an approval for the applicant.
CDFI financing: community development financial institutions serve communities and businesses through their own lending programs. Geography, mission and program requirements matter. There is no single CDFI approval rule.
Term loans: discuss a defined funding amount and repayment schedule for a planned business expense. Ask whether the term matches how long the expense will benefit the business.
Business lines of credit: discuss recurring purchases or cash-flow gaps. Compare draw rules, available credit, payment frequency, renewal conditions and fees.
Equipment financing: start with the vendor quote, equipment type, useful life and any down payment. Clarify ownership, collateral, insurance and any end-of-term obligation.
Business-purpose HELOCs: confirm that the specific product permits the intended business use. Property equity alone does not establish eligibility. Understand liens, fees, rate changes and the repayment schedule. Because the home secures the debt, failure to repay can put it at risk.
Compare the complete cost
Before accepting any offer, request the amount you will actually receive, all fees, the payment amount and frequency, total repayment, and early-payoff terms. Ask how payments would change if rates or revenue change. For revenue-based funding, a factor rate is not an annual percentage rate; review the actual agreement and cash-flow impact.
Prepare for the first conversation
Have your business name, time in business, approximate monthly deposits, existing payments, desired amount, intended use and timing ready. An initial inquiry does not require uploading financial documents. If an application is appropriate, the requested documents depend on the product and lender; they may include bank statements, tax returns, current financials or an equipment quote.
Do not put Social Security numbers, account numbers or financial documents into the inquiry message. Use the designated application or document request when those items are needed.
